Potential Ideas And Storylines Update 1
I am planning on taking some of my own photos for my poster that I did before, I hope to get the same effect that the one I made with a google image from the film "The Strangers". Also I will continue with the planning process with Jack for our pitch deadline on this Thursday.
The Ring Film Trailer Analysis
The purpose
of a film trailer is to show and preview an upcoming film to the public and use
the trailer itself as a way of encouraging them to go to the cinema to watch
it, specifically with the horror genre of film there are a variety of codes and
conventions that are contained within a trailer such as the use of slim
storylines to keep the viewer from knowing the entire story, the cliff-hangers
which help to create a suspense for the viewer encouraging them to go and see
it and the effect of the music, the pace and editing to add to the suspense and
the tension created. For “The Ring” film trailer there is a slim storyline
that’s gained from watching it, from the trailer the viewer can see that the
film is based upon an eerie video tape that if one watches it they will receive
a phone call noting that they will “die in seven days” and that they will see
the ring before they die and therefore it’s a race against time for the mother
to her son’s life and her own.
The camera
used in The Ring is very varied and effective at portraying different
representations. For example one of the very first cameras shots in the trailer
is a tracking shot (dolly) of a hallway or corridor inside a very dark lit
house, this particular element has connotations of horror and the fact that
it’s in a dark place gives it a very eerie and sinister feel to it. Another
shot is the high angle shot that’s used to show the young boy who’s watching
the videotape inside his home, the high angle shot here particularly emphasises
the fact that he’s very young and the fact that he’s very vulnerable to this
sort of phenomenon, this therefore helps to also emphasise the connotations of
horror just like in the previous shot but also in this shot there is the sense
of iconography with the very dark, gloomy and sinister feel to the home in
which the boy is watching the videotape as these elements of cinematography are
very typical in the horror genre of film. To add to this these are also some of
the many codes and conventions of horror in film.
In “The
Ring” film trailer there is some iconography that’s used with the mise èn scene
with the use of setting and location of the woodland and wooded parts In which
parts of the trailer a set in, this particular element is generally a very
typical one in the horror genre of film as the woods are usually associated as
being very dark and gloomy places in which you might associate the thoughts and
feelings of not being able to escape and being trapped forever.
The sound is
another way in which the horror in this trailer is portrayed, there is not
really any dialogue sound heard throughout but there are many other sounds
heard. For example from about 45 seconds into the trailer there are voices that
are heard and things such as “You saw it, you saw the tape!” are heard, this
edited effect makes the voices seem and appear as voices inside one’s head and
help to add to the paranormal phenomenon that this films is mainly based around
and therefore creating the horror.
The use of
editing in this particular trailer of “The Ring” is also another element that
is particularly effective at portraying the horror genre and helping to add to
the horror consisted in the film trailer. One of the clear examples of editing
in this film trailer is the denotation of the static which appears to pop up on
the screen whenever (in the trailer) any of the people are watching the
videotape, it happens quite regularly throughout the trailer and it helps to
show these connotations of horror and psychological horror because it gives the
viewer a sense that whenever the videotape is being watched the viewer of the
tape is being watched too and the feeling that they aren’t alone whilst
watching it.

Potential Ideas And Storylines Mind Map
This is my mind map below that I created using text2mindmap.com. It just explains some potential ideas and storylines for the trailer I will be creating in order to help me come up with the final outcome.
Mrs D
You are behind on your Research harry. Make sure you catch up soon. I like the iconography of your poster. Next time use your own photographic skills.
Potential Storyline With Poster 1st Draft
This is my first draft of a potential storyline and poster for my film trailer that I call "Feared", as you can see from the poster I would like to base my film trailer around the theme of physcotic masked killers attacking innocent victims with the masks being intimidating such as the examples shown below.

Review Of Ring Trailer
To begin with this trailer is in a chronological order and this would help to show what this story is actually going to be about, having said that the clips shown don't give away to much vital information for the film and that therefore starts to create and build tension for the viewer.
With this you can use Laura Mulvey's ideas on representation for the ring trailer that we made as it actually seem to focus on the male gaze that she explained. In the trailer there is a pretty/attractive young women who is the main character and we in many ways can or are indeed objectifying her.
Todorov's particular theory can apply directly to this trailer. To begin with there is a stable equilibrium which is quickly followed by a force that creates disequilibrium and finally the recognition that this disruption has taken place. After this however the trailer is no longer in chronological order meaning that the resolution and new equilibium is not shown but again this makes the audience want to watch the film.

Summary Of The Film Industry In 2013
This is my research I've displayed of the film industry in 2013. It includes the box office stats for film in the UK and is displayed clearly in the table below:
To summarise this info it would appear to show the importence of trailers and how that has rised as the years have progressed, due to the high amount of films that are being released every year it is even more important for the films to compete with other rival films to make sure it is and becomes the most popular release for the specific target market.
Laura Mulvey's Ideas On Representation
Laura Mulvey came with a theory showing representation between males and females, she coined the term "male gaze" in the year of 1975. She appeared to believe that in film audiences have to "view" characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male. One example of this that I've used is the film Kill Bill, particularly as modern representation as in the film actress Uma Thurman represented a powerful, dominant an independent woman. Compared to a film such as James Bond for example where the audience see him as an attractive man who seems to attract characters in the film, Kill Bill does that same effect but instead with a woman who fights and is agressive etc, this is where male gaze is shown through my example.

Moodboard For Inspiration
This is my inspirational moodboard for my film trialer, the pictures that I've included within the moodboard are images that i would like to use as similar characters and storylines to my horror film trailer, mainly with the idea of either a paranormal activity within a little girl or a muderous attack by a masked indivduals.
Mrs D
You have made a good start to the project Harry. Well done. Go back to your technical skills post and explore SKILLS within the technology. Your analysis of a trailer is a good start. However, you need to be more specific to that trailer - a lot of your analysis would work for any trailer.

Skills Audit
Skills Audit
I believe that since my research for my previous coursework that was for AS level, my actual research skills have improved and developed, in the sense that I feel that I can conduct much more in depth research into a particular thing, I feel that I've improved with my organisation of my research and how my research is structured and how it links into the task that is set (for this piece of coursework it is film trailer research)
What Is The Function Of A Trailer?
What Is The Function Of A Trailer?
The function of a trailer is to encourage a particular audience to go and watch an upcoming film to be realeased (for our sake its film), in a film trailer the usual method is to show what they would classify as the "best" bits in order to get their target audience interested and attracted to go and see it through this encouragement through a decent trailer. To add there are in fact many codes and conventions that apply to film trailers and some of them include key characters, slim storylines, classic settings etc.

Technical Skills
- Final cut
I learnt how to edit footage, crop and cut, adding sound and text etc.
- Tripods
For the camera to film footage, used for a more static look to the footage, reduce and maintain steady of the camera.
- Serif (for magazine)
- Photoshop
- Camera for filming
- Serif photoplus
Similar to the serif used for magazine and a very basic version of photoshop so mainly used for the use of editing images.
Evaluative Analysis Of Ring Trailer
Evaluative Analysis Of Ring Trailer
During the long creation process of our Ring trailer for our task there where a vast amount of strengths during the process as well as a handful of weaknesses. For example a clear weakness with our task group was that there was a massive lack of organisation, we were in a right mess for vast periods of the creation process and we never really had proper organised filming times and editing times it was all just really random and such however we very luckily still managed to pull it off and the trailer was still a great success. From that weakness especially I've learnt personally that organisation is key to success so when it comes to my actual media coursework trailer, I think I will improve very much so because working on my own is something which I excel at I believe. One of our clear strengths that I would've suggested was our filming of the trailer, I believe that even though we still missed out some of the parts of the trailer (basically we didn't have the trailer second for second) we did extremely well with the footage that we had and it showed our perseverance for sure. Just from these two points I've learnt that for one organisation is so so important for success in this coursework, and secondly that perseverance and consistency is vital to continue that success throughout the process.
